Why sensor size matters

Sensor dimensions drive crop factor, field of view for a given lens, depth of field for a given framing, and typically noise performance per stop of light.

FAQ

Is full frame always better?

Full frame gathers more light for the same f-number and framing, which helps noise and dynamic range. Smaller systems are lighter, often cheaper, and deliver deeper DOF when that is desirable.

Choosing a format

Full frame favors low light and shallow DOF; crop sensors favor reach and depth; medium format favors resolution and tonal nuance when lighting is controlled. Use this reference when comparing rental bodies or when a client asks how a phone main camera relates to a “35 mm equivalent” lens claim.
