How video size is calculated

File size scales with bitrate × time. Bitrate is the number of bits stored per second of video. Audio adds a smaller constant bitrate.

Size (GB) ≈ (video Mbps + audio Mbps) × seconds / 8 / 1000

FAQ

Is Mbps the same as MB/s?

No. 8 megabits = 1 megabyte. A 100 Mbps stream is about 12.5 MB per second.

How long will my card last?

Divide usable card capacity by MB per minute from this calculator. Also check the card’s minimum write speed matches your codec.

On-set media planning

Multiply bitrate by hours of rolling time, not just finished runtime—interviews generate dead space, and multicam multiplies media. Match card write speeds to the codec’s sustained rate. Offload to two destinations before formatting.
