How video size is calculated
File size scales with bitrate × time. Bitrate is the number of bits stored per second of video. Audio adds a smaller constant bitrate.
Size (GB) ≈ (video Mbps + audio Mbps) × seconds / 8 / 1000
Typical bitrates
- 1080p H.264 internal: 50–100 Mbps
- 4K H.264/H.265: 100–200 Mbps
- ProRes 1080p: ~150–200 Mbps
- ProRes 4K: 400 Mbps and up
- Raw video: often 1 Gbps+
FAQ
Is Mbps the same as MB/s?
No. 8 megabits = 1 megabyte. A 100 Mbps stream is about 12.5 MB per second.
How long will my card last?
Divide usable card capacity by MB per minute from this calculator. Also check the card’s minimum write speed matches your codec.
