Full-frame equivalent

Equivalent focal length describes the field of view you would get on a 36×24 mm sensor. It does not change the real focal length engraved on the lens.

FAQ

Does equivalent focal length change perspective?

Perspective depends on camera position, not crop factor. Cropping (optically via sensor or in post) changes framing, not the geometric perspective of a given viewpoint.

Equivalence and communication

Clients and collaborators often speak in full-frame terms. Reporting “this is a 23 mm on APS-C, about 35 mm equivalent” keeps everyone aligned on field of view. Remember equivalence does not transfer aperture for depth of field or diffraction in a one-to-one way; use it for framing conversations, then verify DOF with a dedicated calculator when sharpness zones matter.
