What is crop factor?
Crop factor compares your sensor’s diagonal to a full-frame 36×24 mm reference. A 1.5× APS-C sensor sees a tighter field of view than full frame with the same lens; multiplying focal length by 1.5 gives the full-frame equivalent focal length for FOV matching.
Crop factor does not change the real focal length printed on the lens, nor does it change perspective from a given camera position. It only changes how much of the projected image circle you capture.

Does crop factor affect depth of field?
For the same framing and f-number, yes—smaller sensors generally show deeper DOF. Compare with the DOF calculator using each preset.
Thinking in equivalents without confusion
Equivalent focal length helps when you learned composition on full frame and now shoot APS-C, or the reverse. A 33 mm lens on 1.5× crop frames like a 50 mm on full frame; depth of field still differs if f-numbers match, so check DOF separately. Retail listings sometimes quote only “35 mm equivalent” for compact cameras—this calculator reverse-engineers what that means for the true focal length on the tiny sensor inside.
